Inchcolm - an island so close and remote.
This was
third attempt we’ve planned this cruise for quite some times. But unbelievable
but true we’ve missed the last boat twice previously. The first time was 3-4
years ago and the second back in 2005. But this time we went for the first
cruise at 10.30am, just to stay on the safe side !

The
conditions were perfect: low wind, sun and high visibility.
The cruise departed from South Queensferry just below the Forth
Rail
Bridge (masterpiece of engineering by Telford). After a 30min cruise made more interesting by a
commentary we reached the island. Within the Firth of Forth there are a variety
of small and big islands all starting with the suffix Inch : that is the Gaelic
word for island.
Inchcolm
has only two inhabitants, the guardians of the Abbey. The two, husband and wife
seems to enjoy their secluded location, but at the same time they love
tourists.

The island
is a gorgeous location: relaxed and full of green fields. The view from the
middle of the forth is staggering, you can see Edinburgh,
the Bridges, and Fife. Even if the island
isn’t highly populated, seagulls and other birds are everywhere. The Abbey itself is rather spectacular and just
next to it there is the guardian’s house (just next to the big tree).
